Start with a realistic range

Use mileage observed on journeys similar to the one ahead, rather than the best figure ever shown on the dashboard. Account for the return trip, traffic around the destination and the distance needed to reach an alternative station.

For an illustrative calculation, 10 usable litres at 25 km/l gives 250 km before applying your reserve. It does not mean you should plan a 250 km gap between stops. The usable quantity, conditions and reserve need to fit your vehicle and route.

Build a shortlist around the route

Open the fuel map and search the towns you expect to pass. Check the actual road access to each outlet. A pin that looks close to the highway may be on a service road, beyond a divided carriageway or accessible only through a town.

For a specific product such as XP100, cross-check the lead with IndianOil's product and outlet information. Then call about current stock. A product directory and a phone confirmation answer different parts of the planning problem.

Confirm the questions that could change your plan

Ask for the complete grade name, current availability, opening hours and price. If the ethanol specification matters to your vehicle, ask about that independently. Note when the information was obtained.

Before departure, save:

• The primary station's address and contact.
• A backup outlet reachable within your planned reserve.
• The practical detour distance for each option.
• Any uncertainty that remains about the grade.

Include the cost of the detour

An outlet with a lower price can cost more overall if reaching it adds substantial distance. Use the fuel-cost calculator once for the planned trip and again with the detour added. The difference is the extra fuel budget; tolls and time are separate costs.

Do not rely on a fixed percentage improvement from a fuel grade to justify a tight range calculation. Use the fuel-log method to build your own evidence.

What if the planned grade is unavailable?

Choose the next action using your vehicle's approved fuel requirements and the range remaining. Reconfirm the backup before making another long detour. If you cannot resolve compatibility, contact the manufacturer or roadside support rather than improvise from an old online recommendation.

After the journey, share dated observations. An update that clearly says "out of stock when called" is more useful than a permanent claim that the station never sells the product.
